How to get more Google reviews for your restaurant

Practical ways for restaurants, cafés and bars to get more Google reviews: ask at the right moment, make it one tap, and reply to every review.

Why Google reviews matter

Before choosing where to eat, most people look at the Google rating and read a few recent reviews. A place with many recent, positive reviews looks alive and trustworthy; a place with a handful of old ones looks like a gamble.

The number of reviews and how recent they are matter almost as much as the average. A steady flow of new reviews is what keeps a restaurant visible in Google Maps.

Ask at the right moment

The best moment is at the end of a good visit — when the bill arrives, when guests pay, or when they thank the staff. The experience is fresh and they still have their phone in hand.

Asking a day later by message works far less well: by then the meal is a memory and the review never gets written.

Make it one tap

Every extra step loses guests. Nobody wants to search for your restaurant on Google Maps, scroll to the reviews and find the button.

  • Use your direct Google review link, which opens the review form straight away.
  • Put it behind a QR code on table cards, receipts, menus and bill folders.
  • Test it on a phone yourself: scan, tap, write. If it takes more than a few seconds, simplify it.

Let your staff ask naturally

A short, sincere sentence from the waiter — “If you enjoyed it, a Google review really helps us” — works better than any sign. Train the team to say it at the end of good visits, not to every table by rote.

Never pay for reviews or offer discounts in exchange for them. Google's rules forbid incentivised reviews, and they can be removed.

Reply to every review

Replies show future guests that someone is listening. Thank people by name, mention something specific they wrote, and keep it short. For critical reviews, stay calm, apologise for the experience and invite the guest to contact you directly.
